Join the Rancho Bernardo CERT Team!
Next Academy Class Begins September 30, 2010
Rancho Bernardo needs your help in being prepared for emergency situations. Residents in our community are being encouraged to volunteer for the City of San Diego's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The teams are composed of community members trained in basic disaster response, fire safety, light search and rescue, incident command organization and disaster medical operations. CERT San Diego is taught by San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel. You will learn how to make your home and neighborhood safer, build a disaster kit, learn to combat "the three killers", how to use fire extinguishers and how to form a team working with the Fire Department in disaster situations. Many CERT volunteers assisted during the recent October fires. Volunteer work can range from processing important paperwork to hands on, physical work. Classes are being offered to be taken either one evening during the week or Saturday mornings. Anyone 18 years of age and older is eligible to take the classes. There is no tuition for the six-week CERT academies. There is a slight fee for materials. For more information click here: CERT San Diego Classes | San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Fifty CERT San Diego team members woke on May 9, 2009 to the rumblings of a 7.0 earthquake. Though only a drill, the faux temblor tested members’ reactions to search, rescue, triage, and fire suppression. Volunteers from Rancho Bernardo, Penasquitos, Santa Luz and Scripps Ranch donned green helmets and vests, grabbed backpacks, and tools, and coordinated a three-hour exercise anticipating a worst-case “what if?” scenario. “Our team came through with flying colors” reports RB team leader Roger Fraumann. To learn more about CERT San Diego and how to join visit www.sandiego.gov/fireandems/cert/classes.shtml.

BE PREPARED FOR: Earthquakes, Fires, Flood/Drought, Power Failures or Terrorist Attacks |
When any one of these disasters strike, our government agencies will be inundated with emergency calls and may not be able to come to our assistance for at least 72 hours. Rancho Bernardo needs to work together as a community to prepare ourselves for any type of disaster (joining CERT). We also need to educate and prepare ourselves as individuals until outside help can come to our aide.
