Free Fans ~ Casablanca Fan Company, maker of the World’s Finest Ceiling Fans™,and FanDiego, one of the largest independent ceiling fan retail chains in Southern California, are joining together to support victims of the recent San Diego fires by offering a free ceiling fan to residents whose homes were lost or damaged.

The Red Cross estimates that more than 1,600 homes were destroyed in the fires that scorched nearly 300,000 acres in San Diego County during October.

“Casablanca fans have been part of people’s homes for decades. We feel for their loss and want to help the fire victims rebuild their homes with our ceiling fans. In addition, the rebuilt home will permanently benefit from the energy savings provided by the fan, helping all of us reduce our energy consumption,” said Jim Holcomb, president of Casablanca Fan Company.

“Our hearts go out to the people who are rebuilding their homes and their lives after the fires. This is our way of helping each household and giving back to a community that has supported our business for years,” said Jeanie Betancourt, president of FanDiego. “Partnering with Casablanca enables us to provide fire victims with a top-of-the-market ceiling fan, which literally will operate flawlessly and silently for decades to come.”

Fire victims will receive a free Casablanca “Panama” four-speed ceiling fan. ThePanama is Casablanca’s most popular model in a classic style that blends with any décor. They can select a 66xxF or 66xxG motor and set of blades in their choice of finish (subject to availability) to match the interior of their rebuilt home. The retail value of the fan is approximately $250.

San Diego County residents whose homes were lost or damaged in the recent fires can rebuild with a free Casablanca "Panama" 4-speed ceiling fan, shown here in a Brushed Nickel finish with Teak blades.
Click here for the photo and to View Multimedia Gallery

The Panama is among a broad range of Casablanca ceiling fan models created to work smarter, not harder, so that each element is fine-tuned to contribute to overall savings in energy costs. The powerful Casablancamotors move more cubic feet of air per minute while using significantly less energy. Fan blades are set at the optimum pitch to provide maximum airflow at each speed setting. Even at the highest setting, aCasablanca fan consumes about the same amount of energy as a 100-watt light bulb.

Consumers can save up to 40% on cooling costs and 10% on heating costs by operating a Casablanca fan year round, in the counter-clockwise direction in the summer and the reverse direction in the winter.

To participate in the Casablanca/FanDiego Fire Relief Program, fire victims simply need to visit a FanDiego store in San Diego, Murrieta, Rancho Mirage, or San Marcos before December 31, 2008. The offer is for one free fan per household, and presentation of official government-issued documentation, an insurance claim form, or a Red Cross voucher that provides evidence of the loss is required. For more information, call FanDiego at 858-292-9244.

Hope Counseling Center Offers Free Professional Counseling Services to Wildfire Survivors from all areas.
Hope Counseling Center, an outreach of Hope United Methodist Church, originally opened its doors four years ago in the Rancho Bernardo community of San Diego. Due to funds recently provided by UMCOR, the Methodist relief organization, the Center is currently offering free counseling services to wildfire survivors. These services are provided by licensed psychotherapists and are available for individuals, children, couples or families.

Hope Counseling Center offers the following programs for Fire Survivors from all areas of town:

Free Support Groups
Short term Trauma Treatment for Adults, Teens and Children
Daytime, evening and weekend hours

Common symptoms that can be quickly and effectively treated are:
Nightmares
startle responses to smell, sounds or images of fire
crying, anger, lack of motivation or feeling overwhelmed
increased anxiety since the fires
increased family conflict since Wildfires

Talking to a professional counselor can be helpful as can a treatment known as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). It is a short term treatment that can reduce trauma symptoms effectively. Hope Counseling Center offers this as an option for Fire Survivors.

Hope Counseling Center is located in the RB Medical Dental Building, 16766 Bernardo Center Dr. Suite 208, San Diego, CA 92128. For further information, to sign up for individual counseling or a support group, please email the Center at HopeCounselingCenter@gmail.com or contact Edie Davis, MA, MFT, Director of HCC, at: 619-218-2874

FEMA--More clarification:
FEMA--Regarding underinsured, the insurance settlement letter should contain what the benefit covers, structure and/or contents. During FEMA registration, based on their household situation, they would be referred to SBA. They need to submit the completed loan application. If they qualify for an SBA loan, they would not be referred to the FEMA ONA program for contents. They do not have to accept the SBA loan, but they will not be provided a FEMA grant for contents if referred to SBA.
Suppose the household was denied an SBA loan and was referred back to FEMA for personal property. If they are underinsured, then uninsured losses for both structure and contents minus deductibles could reach the maximum grant. However, FEMA has a replacement schedule it follows. If the household lost a dinning room set, table and six chairs, FEMA will provide, let’s say $575 to replace the set. If the household was paid $600 by the insurance company and the set was an antique Shaker set worth $3000, FEMA would not recognize $2400 as uninsured loss because the family did not insure the set as an antique. The benefit paid by the insurance company, $600, is already more than what FEMA would provide.

"OUT OF THE ASHES" ORGANIZATIONAL TOOL
CREATED AND DISTRIBUTED BY CEDAR FIRE VICTIMS

To assist families who lost their homes in the Witch Creek fire, a group of nearly 100 Scripps Ranch volunteers designed, assembled and are distributing 1000 file system totes, customized to the needs of recovering fire victims. Each portable, plastic tote contains pre-labeled hanging files and manila folders to help organize the many important forms, receipts, and documents acquired during the recovery process.

Many of this project's volunteers lost their Scripps Ranch homes in the 2003 Cedar Fire and are now eager to "pay it forward" by sharing their post-fire experience and knowledge with those who are beginning the recovery process in Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Ramona and other surrounding areas. They reveal, "Getting organized helps you feel in control of your life again."
The totes are currently available (free of charge) at the Rancho Bernardo Assistance Center (18448 West Bernardo Dr., San Diego, CA, 92127). Plans are currently underway to distribute totes at additional Relief Centers.

Please feel free to share this information with friends and neighbors affected by the 2007 fires. From our families to yours, we wish you resilience in this challenging time.

Though the threat from the fires has subsided, pet owners in need will continue to struggle with financial troubles brought on by property loss and emergency pet care expenses. To help these residents, the San Diego Humane Society’s Fire Relief Pet Assistance Program will provide reimbursement of up to $500 per household to cover pet-related expenditures incurred due to the fires. Reimbursement is available for veterinary expenses, transportation and boarding expenses, pet food, livestock feed, and pet or livestock supplies.

Pet owners directly affected by the fires may find out more about the Fire Relief Pet Assistance Program and complete an application for assistance by emailing Kimmy O’Connor or by calling (619) 243-3434.
From the Escondido Humane Society, who is helping pets who have been displaced by the fires ~ We have ongoing needs for canned cat food, canned dog food, rubber Kong toys to aid in stress reduction, towels, and paper towels. Due to the high number of animals in our care, and the number of residents in our area who have lost their homes and need pet supplies to get them through, our supplies are drained quickly. If you would like to make an in-kind donation for the animals, all pet supplies are still gratefully accepted. Photo taken on Thursday, October 25 of one of the many animal evacuees in our care. Help the smallest victims of the recent wildfires - the animals. Support the Fire Fund at the Escondido Humane Soicety with a tax-deductible gift, and help the animals most in need. Your gift will care for the animal fire victims at our no-kill shelter and will support the veterinary care, rehabilitation, sheltering, and re-homing efforts for companion animals affected by the wildfires.
We are also in need of foster homes and supplies...see below for ways that you can help create a brighter future for animals in need during this especially challenging time. The Adoption Center at the Escondido Humane Society was closed and converted to an emergency center for animals abandoned or displaced by the fires. These puppies were surrendered to our care by a family who lost everything in the fire. Here's what you can do today to help the animals affected by the firestorm:

-Mail a donation to the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 East Valley Parkway, Escondido, CA, 92027. Please designate "Fire Fund" on the memo line or include a note letting us know that you'd like to help the animals affected by the fires.

-Call our donation hotline at (760) 888-2240 and make a gift to the Escondido Humane Society's Fire Fund. This will have a direct, immediate impact on the animals most in need. If we miss your call, pleaseleave a message so we may return it. As of Friday evening, we remain on emergency operations, so nearly all available staff are devoted to direct animal care. Your donations are especially important right now.
